The focus of the Big Brother / Big Sister Mentoring scheme is to further expand the relationship between troubled youth and H.D.P Mentors.
Many Indigenous kids lack positive role-models in their lives and because of this, many of these youth become engaged in deviant behaviours. The Big Brother / Big Sister Mentoring Scheme gives these kids the opportunity to make positive and personal connection to H.D.P Mentors, through a variety of different recreational and educational activities. At these activities, the H.D.P Mentors will be continually promoting and reinforcing the importance of staying in school and leading active, healthy & crime-free lifestyles.
Targeted young people will be nominated by interested parents, designated School Officials / Community Education Councilors and other outside community resources including Youth Justice and the Department of Communities.
The H.D.P Mentors will be come from within the local community and could include sporting identities, business entrepreneurs and targeted people from public and private employment sectors.
The main goals of the ‘Big Brother / Big Sister Mentoring Scheme’ are -
- To give kids an opportunity to build a strong rapport with supportive and positive role-models.
- To give kids an outlet that doesn’t involve crime, drugs, tobacco or alcohol.
- To reinforce to kids the importance of staying in school and leading active, healthy lifestyles.
This will be a free service to those young people involved. For further information about the Big Brother & Big Sister Mentoring scheme please call Joel Khalu on (07) 4041-2145.
