Midnight Basketball will be conducted on Friday evenings at the Cairns Basketball Complex.  The program will run from 9 p.m. – 12 midnight. on these Friday evenings and will give youth an opportunity to engage in activities and games associated with basketball.  These activities will take place in a supervised and safe - drug, alcohol and tobacco free environment.

The main goal of this program is to build youth assets and healthy lifestyle choices for young people through mentoring schemes, and providing a positive alternate outlet.  This program will give youth an opportunity to spend the duration of their Friday evenings in a positive environment, where emphasis is placed on fun, friendship and fitness. An interactive presentation highlighting the importance of education, goal-setting and healthy living will be conducted at schools in the Cairns and surrounding areas.  The School-Based Motivational & Educational Program will be focused on students who are currently attending high-school.

The main outcome of the School-Based Motivational & Educational Program is for the students to have positive role-models that they can connect with, visit their school and deliver a positive message, helping students to develop or enhance that intrinsic motivation, which they will need to be successful in life. D.R.E.A.M.S:  Dedication – Responsibilities – Education – Attitude – Motivation - Self-Image

The DREAMS program is designed and delivered to children, youth and young parents with the youth age 5yrs-25yrs. The DREAMS program is part of the Department of Communities Alcohol Demand funding for the Hopevale Aboriginal Community. The DREAMS program is delivered to Hopevale children and youth going to school in Cairns, (Peace Lutheran College & Djarragun College), Cooktown (Cooktown S.H.S) and Hopevale (Hopevale State School). The focus of the Big Brother / Big Sister Mentoring scheme is to further expand the relationship between troubled youth and H.D.P Mentors. 

Many Indigenous kids lack positive role-models in their lives and because of this, many of these youth become engaged in deviant behaviours.  The Big Brother / Big Sister Mentoring Scheme gives these kids the opportunity to make positive and personal connection to H.D.P Mentors, through a variety of different recreational and educational activities.  At these activities, the H.D.P Mentors will be continually promoting and reinforcing the importance of staying in school and leading active, healthy & crime-free lifestyles. The H.D.P Cruiser is a vehicle specifically designed to visit ‘hotspots’, where Indigenous youth typically congregate.  A ‘hotspot’, is defined as a place where youth meet on a regular basis and ‘hotspot’ examples may include – skate ramps, parks and recreation areas, commercial shopping areas and inner-city public rest areas. The H.D.P Basketball Tournament will be held in Cairns, and will be divided into a Senior Division (Men’s & Women’s) and also a Junior Division (Boys & Girls).  Details of the tournament will be determined by the number of nominating teams.  Nominations will be open to teams from throughout QLD.  The tournament will have an Indigenous focus however specific overseas invitational teams may also be invited. The Charity Basketball Game will be take place showcasing some of the country’s most celebrated Indigenous and Non-Indigenous athletes.  HDP Ambassadors & targeted athletes from a variety of sporting backgrounds will be invited to compete in this game. Read More >>>>
